Masdar City – an ambitious project in the dessert

Although Masdar City´s ambituous target to become the first 0 carbon & energy indepent city is already discarded as it is currently not realizable with the given technology, the goals for the 40.000 resident city in the middle of the dessert are still ambituous.

Masdar, part of Abu Dhabi´s vision 2030 – basically a long term strategic plan to transform the emirate of Abu Dhabi into a world class economy, is now positioned to become a sustainable city with the lowest possible ecological footprint.

At least 20% of the energy demand shall be produced by onsite renewable energy sources. The remaining energy demand shall be covered by offsite renewable sources.

A 10MW solar photovoltaic plant is already operational within Masdar City, the largest such solar plant in the Middle East.

The project is located close to Abu Dhabi UAE, was started in 2006 and is expected to be finished in 2020-2025 (originally planned for 2016).

Masdar City is hosting the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and is also establishing a university for research and development of new, renewable energy technologies – the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology.
